Make Healthy Nutritional Choices For Your Superbowl Party!

A report from the NIH: We make dozens of decisions every day. When it comes to deciding what to eat and feed our families, it can be a lot easier than you might think to make smart, healthy choices. It takes just a little planning. The food we put into our bodies is our fuel. It provides us with nutrients—the vitamins, minerals, and other compounds our bodies need to function and thrive. Research shows that good food choices are especially important for children’s growing bodies and minds. Smart choices have both immediate and long-lasting benefits for you and your family.   “My best advice is for parents to be good role models by eating healthy and being physically active with their children,” says Janet de Jesus, a nutritionist at NIH. “Keep healthy foods around the house for meals and snacks. If you save desserts and treats for special occasions, it will be more special. Involve children in the meal planning and cooking, and they will be more likely to eat the meals.”   “Parents can begin teaching their children about healthy eating from the day they are born,” says Dr. Donna Spruijt–Metz, whose research at the University of Southern California focuses on preventing and treating obesity in minority youth. “Setting a good example is very important.”   Try the GO, SLOW, WHOA approach to food. GO foods are great to eat anytime. They have lots of nutrients and ...

How Do I To Lose Weight? Please Help Me!!!

Here we go again, the age old question that continues to make headlines: to lose weight, should we limit the total amount of calories, carbohydrates or the fat grams that we eat? Or should we eat endless amounts of fat and protein and just limit the starchy foods? Or should we eat whole grains, proteins and low fat? Or maybe just liquid protein, or rice or cabbage or grapefruit? What is the answer? Well, it seems that we are slowly getting directed to the answer my friends. A research projected headed by Andrew D. Calvin, M.D., MPH from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn, and presented at the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology and Prevention/Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism (EPI/NPAM) meeting in San Diego, suggests that not getting enough sleep will increase the amount of calories that are consumed. In fact, as sleep time decreases, calories intake rises. So it seems that the longer we remain awake, the more we tend to eat. I think this makes a lot of sense. I know from a personal stand point, if I am up late, reading or reviewing the literature, I tend to visit the kitchen quite often. And I can tell by the scale in the morning (besides my pants getting tighter), that I have gained weight because of my nocturnal eating patterns. I bet each and every one of you reading ...

Salad Adventures 102: Choosing the Best Salad for You- Part 2. Graehm Gray

Hello my fans and welcome to Salad Adventures 102- the second part of how to make the best salad choice. I know it seems easy. Just choose the lettuce, throw in a few tomatoes and bing badda bing, you are done. Well, it doesn’t stop there. What about the peppers, or the radishes or the cucumbers? What color tomatoes should you use? Which lettuce- the Romaine or the Radicchio? Do I add grilled chicken or maybe sliced steak? What dressing do I use? You can see the choices and options are endless. And if you are at a salad bar with people behind you waiting for you to make your choices, the pressure is on! The most important guide to choosing a salad is to keep it healthy and eat the best in each class. Forget the fried anything’s! Grilled chicken is fine- fried is not!! Most salad croutons (you know those crunchy and sometimes soggy pieces of bread that they throw on Caesar and other salads) are baked and fried in oil- so you don’t need those extra carb and fat calories- so forget them. Fresh fruit and dried fruits provide natural sugar sweeteners, fiber, vitamins and antioxidants and are okay in moderation. Just remember that even though they are healthy and natural by themselves, fruit (fresh or dried) still counts for carbohydrate calories and content in the ...
