Healthy eating is one of the most powerful tools we have to reduce the onset of disease.… The Guidelines Follow a healthy eating pattern across the lifespan. All food and beverage choices matter. Choose a healthy eating pattern at an appropriate calorie level to help achieve and maintain a healthy body weight, support nutrient adequacy, and reduce the risk of chronic disease. Focus on variety, nutrient density, and amount. To meet nutrient needs within calorie limits, choose a variety of nutrient-dense foods across and within all food groups in recommended amounts. The Nerdel Series of Children’s Books: Graehm Gray

Hello my fans. I want to tell you all about two fantastic children’s books by my pal Nerdel: Nerdel’s ABC Book and Counting on Fruit with Nerdel. Who is Nerdel? Well, Nerdel is a funny little alien who landed on Earth, really by accident, and has decided to help children all over the world learn how to eat healthy, exercise and stay fit. Nerdel doesn’t always know the right things to eat and how to play all of the sports on Earth, so he learns too with his Earthly friends and family. Nerdel’s ABC Book, with great pictures and a rhyming story, is a wonderful way to teach the ABC’s to your child. We are always looking for new teaching methods to educate our children. In Nerdel’s ABC Book, a child can learn the alphabet in a tasty and healthy way. After all, if we can teach our children about eating healthy and fitness at a young, and continuously reinforce these tenets, they will understand the importance and reasons to eat healthy throughout their lives. Graehm Gray: “The Fat Police”-Is it time?-should we penalize people who are overweight?

Well, I am back my friends-after a brief but needed vacation. Actually I didn’t go anywhere. I just stayed home and paid bills, read mail, cleaned and organized my desk, went grocery shopping several times, caught up on my TIVO. You know, sometimes you just don’t have to go anywhere. It’s certainly cheaper. Anyway, I was having dinner with some friends and of course the topic of nutrition comes up. They all know what I do, so inevitably someone will start the conversation off about cholesterol, fats in the foods and childhood obesity. This time was bit different. After discussing the idea of where to begin nutrition and fitness education and deciding it was in preschool, we covered the BMI report card, the “Let’s Move” program by First Lady Michelle Obama, Jaime Oliver’s new show on ABC: “Food Revolution,” and ended with the buy an extra seat on the airlines for the obese traveler. But it didn’t end there. This discussion was more heated. Most of my friends have kids, and most of their kids are in the “okay” weight range-meaning that they are in the middle of the BMI range. Some of the kids are overweight and some are thin. And then it happened: one of my friends said that we will not get anywhere with the obesity problem unless there is government intervention. All About Breakfast: Breakfast is an important meal for everyone to eat. It is especially important for children and teenagers. A good breakfast plays an important role in physical health and supports emotional stability and mental alertness. Breakfast should have lots of fiber, good fats and protein; and should contain as little added sugar as possible. Nutritious Lunch Tips: Lunch needs to be balanced so that there's enough energy both for the brain and the body to finish the day productively. Lunch should have a protein, a good grain and good fats. It should be similar to breakfast but contain a slightly larger portion to get you through the brunt of your work day as well as at least one serving of veggies. Veggies are important because they provide the mind and body with much needed energy as well as many vitamins, minerals and powerful antioxidants. These all help you reach your maximum potential throughout the day. Easy munchies such as finger fruits like grapes, Clementine's (they peel easily) bananas, apples, pears and nectarines offer a great natural pick me up. Veggies like carrots, celery, peppers, cucumbers and broccoli are easy to dip in salsas, guacamole or hummus. Lunch doesn't have to be a sandwich.
