WHO: Global Report on Diabetes

On the occasion of World Health Day 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) issues a call for action on diabetes, drawing attention to the need to step up prevention and treatment of the disease. The first WHO Global report on diabetes demonstrates that the number of adults living with diabetes has almost quadrupled since 1980 to 422 million adults. This dramatic rise is largely due to the rise in type 2 diabetes and factors driving it include overweight and obesity. In 2012 alone diabetes caused 1.5 million deaths. Its complications can lead to heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and lower limb amputation. The new report calls upon governments to ensure that people are able to make healthy choices and that health systems are able to diagnose, treat and care for people with diabetes. It encourages us all as individuals to eat healthily, be physically active, and avoid excessive weight gain. The Report: Diabetes is a serious, chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (a hormone that regulates blood sugar, or glucose), or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. National Nutrition Month – March 2011: Graehm Gray

Wow, by the response from my last blog, you guys and gals are ready! It seems that many of us are ready to get the weight off.  I am proud of all of you honest folks-yes, we let it out-we are honest-we gained weight and we are not happy campers. And now, you took the first five steps: 1. You got rid of all of the junk food in your kitchen-had to be done 2. You have weighed yourself-good or bad-had to be done 3. Childhood Obesity Definitions-Part Three: Graehm Gray

Despite many efforts, the obesity epidemic persists. Adults and kids are getting heavier every minute. Continuing my goal to allow us all to understand the problems associated with childhood obesity, I am now presenting part three of the Childhood Obesity Series* on definitions. Parts One and Two have explained some basic terms that we all read and hear daily. I would call them buzz words that so many of us in the press use to convey our messages. Now we need to increase the size of our lexicon to include more advanced terminology and explanations in order for us to arrive at a solution:  1 - Five a Day* We have been told that we need a minimum of five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Most research shows that fruits and vegetables are vital to promoting good health. Fruits and vegetables contain essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that may help protect you from chronic diseases. Graehm Gray: Obesity Rates Are On The Rise. We Need To Eat Less!

I have been reviewing the most recent report from the Trust for America's Health (TFAH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF)-F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America’s Future 2010. According to the report, the rates of obesity are on the rise in most states except Washington, D.C. (21.5% adult obesity and 20.1 % childhood obesity). In fact, in the most recent American Fitness Index, the District of Columbia was rated as the “fittest” city in the United States. In this new report, Mississippi with an adult obesity rate of 33.8% was ranked as the “most Obese State in the Nation,” while the State of Oregon had the lowest childhood obesity with a 9.6%. Here are the highlights of the report: More than two-thirds of states (38) have adult obesity rates above 25 percent. In 1991, no state had an obesity rate above 20 percent. Adult obesity rates for Blacks and Latinos were higher than for Whites in at least 40 states and the District of Columbia. 10 out of the 11 states with the highest rates of obesity were in the South -- with Mississippi weighing in with highest rates for all adults (33.8 percent) for the sixth year in a row. 84 percent of parents believe their children are at ...
