Teenagers Need To Eat More Fiber to Avoid Heart Disease and Diabetes

As we already know, our kids are getting many of their calories each day from sugary foods like soda, energy drinks and sugar loaded snacks. Now, new research by Joseph Carlson of Michigan State University’s Division of Sports and Cardiovascular Nutrition and published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association,  indicates that teens need to increase the fiber in their diets by eating more plant based foods and not focus on restricting the fats. According to the USDA (choosemyplate.gov), here are the health benefits from eating more plant based foods (fruits and vegetables): Eating a diet rich in vegetables and fruits as part of an overall healthy diet may reduce risk for heart disease, including heart attack and stroke. Eating a diet rich in some vegetables and fruits as part of an overall healthy diet may protect against certain types of cancers. Diets rich in foods containing fiber, such as some vegetables and fruits, may reduce the risk of heart disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. Eating vegetables and fruits rich in potassium as part of an overall healthy diet may lower blood pressure, and may also reduce the risk of developing kidney stones and help to decrease bone loss. Graehm Gray: Apps for Healthy Kids – a Nutrition and Fitness Competition Sponsored by First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move Campaign to End Childhood Obesity

First Lady Michelle Obama has made it her mission to tackle the issues of childhood obesity. She developed the Let’s Move campaign with the focus to encourage kids all over the United States (and the world) to get active and eat healthy: “Through the Let’s Move! campaign—a comprehensive, collaborative, and community-oriented initiative that addresses all of the various factors that lead to childhood obesity—we are engaging every sector of society that impacts the health of children to provide schools, families and communities the simple tools they need to help kids be more active, eat better, and get healthy.” As we all are aware, childhood (and adult) obesity is at epidemic proportions. According to the recent statistics, our nation is getting fatter and less fit. We are headed in the wrong direction. It is very difficult for individuals to lose the added weight once they have gained it. Graehm Gray: School Budgets Cutting PE, Music and Art Classes –Ridiculous or What!

Okay, stay with me on this one. School budgets are being cut. The economy stinks-let’s face it. Recovery? Where Mr. President? Maybe on Wall Street-yep the stock market seems to have rebounded. Banks are paying back our stimulus money. Great! Wall Street executives are getting fat bonuses, again. Also great! General Motors is re-upping about 600 dealers. Life is super great! What! Give me a break. Housing foreclosures are still among the highest levels in years. More single family homes and apartments are for sale. Prices are dropping. More people are giving up their homes, cars and possessions. The jobs wanted market is flooded with people looking. And now the latest misery, School Boards across the country, stretched to the max with money problems are cutting PE (Physical Education), Music and Art classes. Who needs more artists and musicians anyway? Culture-blah humbug-don’t need it. And as for PE-well that’s a no brainer-let’s have our kids keep eating and eating, consuming more and more calories and not burning anything off. What does that equal? Graehm Gray -Childhood Obesity and The Meal Act: H.R. 3895- Can it finally pass?

What can we do? Well as you may have noticed, in various parts of the country (e.g. New York), restaurants have had to stop using trans-fats and have had to reveal the nutritional information about their foods. Some have been providing this information already, but you have to ask for it. Who ever goes up to the counter and says, “I'll have a burger, fries, a shake-and by the way can you tell me how many grams of fat that is?” Of course we don't. In fact, have you ever asked this question before sitting down to a family meal, “Mom, how many calories are in the turkey and gravy tonight? And by the way mom, can I have some low fat, low sugar and low salt salad dressing, please?”, for most of us, probably never. But maybe we should!! “Sorry mom, but excess saturated fat is associated with heart disease, too much sodium can give me high blood pressure and well, too much the sugar will give me diabetes.
