I have been a consumer of Clif Bars for many years having been introduced to them by several martial arts instructors and marathon runners. It is difficult to find a tasty and nutritious energy bar and like most of us you probably go to the market and sample different bars all the time, trying to find the one that tastes like a Milky Way or Baby Ruth, but has the nutrition profile of a combination of a piece of wild Alaskan Salmon, dark green salad, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and dried fruits. With so many bars out there, what do you choose? And the decision is made even harder-choose one for your child!

Clif Kid is a kid version of the adult Clif Bar. According to the package , there are no Trans fats; there are 12 vitamins and Minerals, no high fructose corn syrup and the Clif Kid snacks are for kids 3 years and older.  There is no caffeine or MSG and this product  is certified Kosher by Kof-K.

Ingedients: Organic Oat Flour, Organic Rolled Oats, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Organic Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice Syrup, Organic Fig Paste, Organic Soy Butter, Organic Dried Blueberries (Organic Blueberries, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice Syrup), Organic White Coating (Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Rice Extract, Organic Vanilla Extract), Natural Flavors, Organic Oat Fiber, Organic Milled Flax Seed, Baking Soda, Salt, Organic Cinnamon. Contains soy and traces of milk and may contain traces of peanuts and tree nuts. None of the ingredients are genetically engineered.

VITAMINS & MINERALS: Calcium Carbonate, Ascorbic Acid (Vit. C), Niacinamide (Vit. B3), Ferric Orthophosphate (Iron), Zinc Oxide, Cyanocobalamin (Vit. B12), Thiamine Mononitrate (Vit. B1), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vit. B6), Riboflavin (Vit. B2), Folic Acid (Vit. B9), Beta Carotene (Vit. A).

Taste: The Z-Bar has a nice cinnamon flavor with an aroma and taste much like chewing on a freshly baked whole grain fruit and nut muffin. The texture is a combination of a nutty and fruity mixture with minimal grainy consistency. There are a lot of delicious blueberries that you can definitely taste and smell. There is a white coating which does not add much to the bar except for an icing type appearance for those kids that like the icing on a cake more than the cake.

Nutrition: One of the first things you see when looking at the nutrition label is the zero saturated fat, zero cholesterol and zero Trans fat. The total fat content of 2.5 grams is made up of the good polyunsaturated fats. The calories count at 120 as well as the sodium and potassium are in line for a child type snack. Like the adult version (i.e. the Clif Bar), the Z Bar is more carbohydrate based. So you will notice more sugars ( organic and natural) as well. Finally there are 3 grams of fiber which help slow the absorption of the sugar (essentially making it a higher glycemic index bar) and also a small amount of protein. There are 12 vitamins included as well but one bar is not meant to provide 100% of the RDA/DRI requirements for kids.

Bottom Line: Good taste with no aftertaste; ingredients are all low fat, natural, whole grain and organic.  “We like our food real. Natural and organic foods aren’t just good for your body. They’re good for the planet.” The Clif Bar Company is devoted to becoming greener and fully sustainable. Through the Clif Bar Family Foundation, they give back to the community by partnering with many groups that “are doing the right thing: for the environment and for our health.” So besides a tasty and nutritious bar, the company is  eco-friendly,  and believes in a sustainable planet, community, people and business.
